This 7yo dude has been in a 6ft Freetime tied off to my kayak as a caboose since 3yo. We had a half-season stand off while arguing over him wanting a backrest and me no longer wanting to tow a snack-eating, back ‘yak driver of a child. : Kayaking

This 7yo dude has been in a 6ft Freetime tied off to my kayak as a caboose since 3yo. We had a half-season stand off while arguing over him wanting a backrest and me no longer wanting to tow a snack-eating, back 'yak driver of a child. : Kayaking


I found this 8ft Freetime that has his backrest and is small enough for my kiddo to control. Decided on her name being Nacho Boat, got her to the ramp, and told him to go do his thing.

I had no doubts.. but still wanted to document the maiden voyage. He knew exactly what to do, down to his timing on loosing the shoes. Our lake cove is fun to explore but hard to get lost in, expecially if you’ve explored it with your Mom steering while you shove snacks in your mouth for 5 years.

…for my parent kayak lovers: the sheer joy both he and I had while he paddled – free to explore – across the water on his own was a tearjerker.
